Gaia-X 4 moveID
Decentralized digital vehicle identities in the highly networked traffic environment
Data sovereignty and data protection for all road users
Gaia-X 4 moveID transforms mobility services into a unified digital ecosystem through the implementation of Self-Sovereign Identities (SSI) for all road users.
Current solutions relying on central architectures and platform models come with limitations for user privacy and data sovereignty. Such central architectures very often create lock-in effects and prevent an open and free scaling of the ecosystems based on them. Gaia-X 4 moveID aims to surpass these limitations by integrating innovative concepts from the field of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT).
Gaia-X 4 moveID creates an identity and transaction infrastructure based on Gaia-X and open identity frameworks to enable a decentralized mobility service ecosystem with non-discriminatory access.
A decentralized ecosystem with open system architecture
By developing the relevant technical and economic building blocks, Gaia-X 4 moveID paves the way towards a decentralized, user-centric mobility data services ecosystem using SSI and DLT frameworks as well as open-source software. This ecosystem supports a wide range of applications such as peer-to-peer parking and charging infrastructure, seamless data availability for smart mobility services, and open markets for data providers, AI applications, and mobility infrastructure services.
A key deliverable is its decentral and open system architecture bringing together digital mobility service providers and users and ensuring data sovereignty and IP protection at the same time. This system architecture enables all stakeholders as well as vehicles to act as self-sovereign actors in a mobility data space with their own digital identities and associated credentials for managing access to mobility services. In addition, Gaia-X 4 moveID creates an incentive system for infrastructure providers and carries out an economic evaluation of the implemented system architecture.
Benefits for all players in the mobility sector
For municipalities and city planners enhanced traffic management and reduced inner-city traffic are possible.
At the same time, efficient cooperation with private players within the mobility sector is supported.
The smart city infrastructure benefits from the solutions developed, including the management of zones, access to charging stations, communication with parking barriers, traffic lights, garages, toll booths and the management of vehicle fleets. Smart City users can be represented and supported by special software agents that make manual interaction with the infrastructure easier or even take it off their hands.
For fleet operators, vehicle manufacturers and automotive suppliers, the project provides access to real-time data to optimize the operation and maintenance of vehicles and even vehicle parts. It enables new business models and the possibility of making mobility and vehicle data available to a unified market. This holds great potential for both internal and external vehicle data. External data includes, for example, assessments of road conditions or available parking spaces along a road. Internal data is of great importance for suppliers of vehicle parts in order to improve their products, but also to enable predictive maintenance of these parts.
The service providers in this ecosystem benefit from the advantages of only having to carry out onboarding once and from being able to offer their infrastructure, data and software services to all relevant players within the ecosystem.
Consumers benefit from improved privacy protection, greater security and improved access to relevant mobility services.
Gaia-X 4 Future Mobility family of projects and Gaia-X ecosystem
The Gaia-X 4 moveID infrastructure has been successfully demonstrated at the IAA 2023. Further demonstrations are actively developed and allow seamless data exchange with other Gaia-X lighthouse projects, with smart city infrastructures from the city of Wolfsburg and the city of Hamburg, and with other data space initiatives.
Gaia-X 4 moveID is based on the Gaia-X data space infrastructure. It actively contributes to the Base-X framework and uses it to enable scalable applications such as the combination of individual data products into comprehensive data chains.
By implementing Gaia-X federation services and by building on the principles of an open-identity ecosystem, data sovereignty, transparency, and interoperability within the mobility domain, Gaia-X 4 moveID ensures seamless integration and communication within the broader project family, with other Gaia-X lighthouses, European data spaces initiatives, and beyond.
By using core services for identity and trust management, Gaia-X 4 moveID not only implements the goals of the Gaia-X ecosystem, but also actively drives them forward. These efforts are leading the way for future mobility and smart city initiatives by creating a global, unified and non-discriminatory market for mobility services.
The following federation services and components are available and are used and offered by Gaia-X 4 moveID:
