Product-Life Cycle – Across Automated Driving
Product Life Cycle of automated driving functions
The GAIA-X 4 Product Life Cycle - Across Automated Driving (PLC-AAD) project is developing an open and distributed data ecosystem to support the product life cycle of automated driving functions.
Automobile manufacturers and their suppliers are facing increasingly complex challenges. The development and integration of automated and interconnected driving functions are particularly challenging. This mainly concerns ensuring the reliability and safety of systems that consist of a wide range of software and hardware components. These components are distributed across multiple subsystems and require complex protection. In addition, it is crucial to make the deep and widely distributed supply chains efficient and transparent. A key strategy for managing this complexity is to optimize data integration. Extensive data from different sources must be merged effectively to ensure the smooth and secure functioning of vehicle systems.
Data ecosystems for the entire product lifecycle
Open and distributed data ecosystems, such as those promoted by initiatives such as Gaia-X, offer a promising solution to the above challenges. These ecosystems enable a structured and organized exchange of data between different stakeholders. A key feature of these platforms is the use of advanced technical measures to ensure trust and security.
In such ecosystems, data and services are designed and managed collaboratively, ensuring a high level of transparency and traceability. Through standardized protocols and secure data transfer mechanisms, all stakeholders - from car manufacturers to suppliers to end users - can trust that their data is protected and used only according to agreed policies. This strengthens trust in digital ecosystems and encourages share data sharing, which in turn can significantly increase innovation and efficiency in the automotive industry.
The project Gaia-X 4 PLC-AAD considers the entire product lifecycle, starting with the development of software and hardware functions, through production and the supply chain, to the operation in the field. For this purpose, the necessary information models, data architectures and associated processes and roles are being developed.
In this project, we integrate use case testbeds and test environments for automated driving functions and their sensors into the data and service ecosystem. We also enable the application for other areas via interfaces.
Cross-company collaboration with digital twins
The data space enables cross-company collaboration and the sovereign data exchange. Information is collected, aggregated and analyzed via digital twins.
Marketplaces bring together data and services for new product offerings and enable distributed added value.
The autonomous driving simulation ecosystem is a win-win for data providers, data users, and the entire community.
Services such as fault simulation can be offered as a service with the ecosystem. The goal is to make the ecosystem the standard for type approvals in the field of automated driving functions.
Gaia-X 4 Future Mobility family of projects and Gaia-X ecosystem
PLC-AAD actively supports the development and use of shared Base-X data space components. This results in semantic models to better describe and utilize mobility-relevant data resources in driving simulations.
This data can be used in portals and various marketplaces via interfaces to the Federated Catalogue. The project develops the necessary extensions for the Gaia-X architectures in direct coordination with the Gaia-X developer communities and is also involved in the actual open source implementation.
In this way, we ensure the long-term stability of the Base-X solutions while remaining fully compatible with other data space projects.
The following Base-X components are used in the Gaia-X 4PLC-AAD project:
XFSC toolbox with portal/marketplace extensions (see illustration).
Eclipse Dataspace Connector with extensions.
CES (Credential Event Service).
SSI/Verifiable Credentials solutions (e.g. mySaveID).
